Working class Republican whites: Betrayed and abandoned

mikereynoldsMr. Trump’s racist rhetoric calls forth unpredictable frenzy from very angry, pessimistic folk in the Republican working class. His often violent rallies should not surprise Establishment Republicans; party elites orchestrated decades of tacit approvals of racially tinged speech and extremism to manipulate their base. It is the politics of demagoguery. To see the working class base of the Republican Party, mostly Trump supporters, as racist is to miss a more powerful emotional current driving them — rage at betrayal and abandonment. They realize now that Republican elites (and Democrats) have no interest in their well-being. (more…)
