The self-funding tax cut scam

mikereynoldsFirst, Governor Deal announced he would not move forward on the recommendations of his Education Reform Commission this year. However, keep in mind the constitutional amendment allowing the governor to take over local schools, severing any local control, is still on the ballot in November. Vote NO.

Here we go. A Republican election victory this fall will give their party complete control of the government and the federal budget. Republican budget policies will be the order of the day. Before you celebrate, consider the budget proposals of the top Republican contenders. (more…)

Alabama shows its colors

charles loveDuring America’s most contentious times in history, the most important issue for the nation’s disenfranchised population was to become full citizens with the ability to choose the country’s leaders. Acquiring that precious right cost hundreds of thousands of lives, divided the country, and scars of the struggle still linger today.

In light of the costs we have paid, protecting and promoting the right to vote should be the most important task on the agenda of all governments everywhere. However, it seems that, in the past 10 years, government has invoked various policies and adopted laws to limit access to the right to vote for certain of our citizens, thus denying the very freedoms we are guaranteed by the Constitution and for which many have given their lives. In a recent column titled “Hot Air at Conference on Climate Change,” influential syndicated columnist Cal Thomas ridiculed the reality of climate change.

Abolish the grand jury to increase trust in the criminal justice system

ken fullerYet another grand jury, on Monday last, refused to file criminal charges against a police officer who killed a black child. We again ask the black community to trust that inside that hearing room, all the evidence was presented, all witnesses were heard, by a grand jury that represented the peers of the Rice family, and the conclusion not to indict was correct and was justice for both the dead child and for his shooter.

We ask that the black community give its trust to this system and that it be accepted with grace and dignity and without suspicion. Do we really ask this with assurance that justice was done, even when the hearing was conducted by law enforcement, for law enforcement, behind closed doors, and under a cloak of secrecy? Or, are we just telling them so to keep the peace, to “keep them in their place”? (more…)
